Markham discusses decadent tendency in fictional literature. He wants to write an article about it. The cost of the letter would be about $500. He wants George to let him know whether to go ahead with the article. Letter is unsigned. Enclosed are pages of an article presented to the Fed of Women's Club of N.Y., written by George Called "Unclean Books", discussing this matter.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
